Whether you're noticing blurry images, pixelated images, or an overall decrease in quality when uploading photos to Instagram, chances are Instagram is compressing your high quality images to save space.

Luckily, there are a few ways you can avoid this - either on your Android device or iPhone via the Instagram app or via the desktop site which now offers options for uploading images and videos.

How To Ensure The Highest Quality Instagram Photos

Like other social media platforms, Instagram uses image compression on all images uploaded to optimize storage space and improve speed. Unfortunately this can sometimes result in a decrease in quality from the original image files. Here are a few ways you can create Instagram posts without sacrificing quality.

Export Your Images At Max Resolution

Since picture quality will decrease when uploaded, it's best to use the highest possible resolution to take the compression into account.

This means 1080px for landscape or square images and 1350px for portrait images.

Make Sure High Quality Uploads Are Enabled

You can adjust this via your Instagram settings menu.

  • Tap your profile photo on the bottom right corner.

  • Tap the three horizontal lines on the top right corner.

  • Tap Settings And Privacy.

  • Scroll down and tap Data Usage And Media Quality

  • Tap Media Upload Quality > Upload At Highest Quality

Transfer Images The Right Way

Be sure to transfer your images directly from your camera or computer via USB drives, email, or another cloud based method rather than by a messaging app like WhatsApp which will compress your photos even further.

What Is The Best Photo Size For Instagram?

While it all depends on your specific post needs the highest quality you can upload is 1080px for landscape or square images and 1350px for portrait images.

What Aspect Ratio Does Instagram Use?

Instagram uses different aspect ratios depending on the specific photo type.

  • Square photos: 1:1

  • Portrait photos: 4:5

  • Landscape photos: 2:1

What Size Image Should You Use For A Profile Icon?

The display size for your Instagram profile pic is 110 x 110 pixels but just like post photos it's best to upload a larger image so that quality is maintained after compression.
